According to the European Commission on Road Safety, about 2,000 cyclists die on European roads every year. One of the problems the authorities call the problem in the interaction of people on bicycles and others – those in the saddle have to remove one hand from the steering wheel to show the direction of their movement or to thank other drivers. Often driving with one hand causes an accident.
It is difficult to notice a bicycle on the road, especially with average speeds increasing on highways from year to year. In addition, to indicate a turn, the cyclist has to remove his hand from the wheel, which leads to a decrease in the quality of driving.
In order to improve road safety, Ford developed the Emoji Jacket, a biker jacket with an integrated screen that can display emoji characters, as part of the Share The Road social campaign. The LED panel can show emoticons, arrows and a warning signal.
In total, a smart jacket will be able to transmit several signals: three standard emoticons, direction indicators and a warning about danger symbols are controlled from a wireless remote control, which the cyclist can install on the handlebar and use it while driving without taking his hands off the wheel and without endangering himself.
Despite the fact that the prototype of the “smart” jacket turned out to be fully functional, Ford has no plans to launch Emoji Jacket in mass production.
Currently, Emoji Jacket is presented as a single demo and is designed to focus on the need to improve the safety of cyclists on modern roads.
